Posterior Capsule Opacification sometimes occurs as a result of cataract surgery. A small proportion of cataract surgery patients (less than 5%) find their eyesight becomes hazy or clouded, due to the outer cells of their old lens moving to the back of their eye and starting to grow.
There’s no need for a separate consultation if you need YAG laser surgery. Your surgeon will invite you to a 30-minute appointment to check the treatment is right for you. It’s also the chance for you to ask any questions you may have. If you decide to proceed, the laser treatment can be carried out straight away. No waiting around required.
YAG laser treatment is quick and pain-free, although you might feel a slight discomfort when the laser is used.

Book an appointmentYAG laser capsulotomy is highly effective in treating PCO, with a low risk of complications. YAG laser can be performed as a non-invasive outpatient procedure. Before a YAG laser procedure takes place, the eye will undergo a thorough exam. This is primarily to ensure the clouding is due to PCO rather than any other condition. This short, pain-free procedure allows light to re-enter the eye, usually resolving visual disruption immediately. Due to the immediate improvement in vision, patients are usually incredibly satisfied with this procedure.
You’ll be given drops in your eye to dilate your pupil. You’ll also be given anaesthetic drops to number your eye.
Once the anaesthetic takes effect, the surgeon will take you to the laser room, and sit you in front of a machine. A laser will be aimed at your eye to create an opening to let light in.
The treatment takes about 15 minutes, but the laser part of the appointment only lasts a minute or so. After which the surgeon will re-examine your eye to make sure the procedure was successful.
