Corneal cross linking

Corneal cross-linking is a laser eye surgical treatment used to slow down or completely stop Keratoconus symptoms, which can cause short-sightedness or astigmatism.

What happens first?

The first step is to have a consultation with one of our experts, who will measure the curvature of your cornea, and carry out diagnostic tests to get a better understanding of your eyes. Your surgeon will explain the options available to you, including corneal cross-linking surgery. If you decide to go ahead with the procedure, we’ll talk you through what is involved, and what to expect in the recovery period. It also gives you the chance to ask any questions you have about the surgery and the recovery period. We understand you might feel nervous, and we’re here to help however we can.

The Benefits of Corneal Cross-Linking
Corneal cross-linking surgery can:
Slow down or stop any keratoconus, which can blur and distort your vision
Help prevent changes to your vision
Make wearing contact lenses more tolerable
Reduce the need for corneal transplant surgery in the future

Treatment options

The surgery is painless and takes around 30 minutes to complete.
Step 1: Anaesthetic
You’ll be given anaesthetic drops to completely numb your eye

Step 2: Drops
When that has taken effect, your surgeon will apply drops to your eyes.

Step 3: Strengthen the cornea
You will be asked to look at a blue light for about 20 minutes. The light will strengthen the tissue in your cornea, by adding bonds between the collagen fibres.

Step 4: After the procedure
You may be given special contact lenses to wear for your recovery.
